How to make soft bread rolls

The secret to making fluffy soft dinner rolls is all in the dough. The dough should be smooth and soft but not sticky. Adding milk, eggs and melted butter in the dough will help to give it a smooth, silky, consistency. Also, the quantity of baking flour that you add to your dough goes a long way to determine how your dough turns out.

Steps to make the perfect dinner rolls

  1. Quality Ingredients: Start with high-quality ingredients, including fresh yeast, all-purpose flour, and real butter. Using quality ingredients will significantly impact the flavor and texture of your rolls.
  2. Proper Yeast Activation: Ensure your yeast is active by dissolving it in warm milk with sugar. Let it sit until it becomes frothy. This step is crucial for the leavening process.

Easy Homemade Dinner Rolls

Ingredients
  

  • 1 tbsp instant dry yeast
  • cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 1 tbsp butter for glazing
  • 3-4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ cup warm milk
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp salted butter melted

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, combine the 2 tablespoon of melted butter, warm milk. warm water, sugar, yeast and salt. Leave to rise for 5-6 minutes.
  • Add the egg and stir in a all purpose flour in batches. Mix as you stir in each batch. Continue to mix for 3 minutes, you want a soft dough to form.
  • Transfer dough to a clean surface and knead for 5 minutes, knead with a mixer if that is what you prefer to use. If using a mixer, start on low speed and increase speed to medium. The consistency of your dough should be elastic and soft.
  • Lightly grease clean bowl and transfer the dough into it. Cover a towel or plastic wrap and leave to rise for 60 minutes.
  • Gently punch down the dough and divide it into 2. Now you have 2 doughs. Divide each dough into 9 dinner rolls, altogether making 18 rolls. Using a baking pan, line the rolls in 3 rolls of 6. If using 2 pans, line the rolls in 3 rolls of 3 for each pan. Cover with a plastic wrap or towel and leave to rise for 40 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375F, once the rolls have risen or doubled in size, pop them into the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Take out of the oven and butter the top. You can also use melted butter to brush the top of the rolls. Leave to stand for 10 minutes and serve.

Notes

*When kneading your dough by hand or mixer, always test for desired constituency. If the dough is sticky, gently add a dash of all purpose flour. The dough should be elastic and soft but should not stick to your hands. 
*Don’t have enough time to make your dinner rolls? Why not make the dough ahead. Prepare the dough up to the second rise, leave the plastic wrap on and refrigerate overnight. The dough will be only be slightly risen. Allow to rest at room temperature for 1 hour before baking. 
*You can make use of Active Dry Yeast. Allow an extra 15 minutes for the yeast to activate.
*Store any leftover dinner rolls in an ziploc bag and wrap with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for up to 3 days.
